“Learn to labor and wait” is what H.W. Longfellow has stressed in his poem “A Psalm of life”. Labor comes first. No doubt we should work like a horse to achieve something fruitful or something which we desire. We have to undergo few/many disappointments in the quest to our goal. We plan a lot and execute a few and move a little towards our goals each day. Our journey may have tough paths like swampy forests, dry deserts etc.
Of course every now and then we might see some mirage of our goals. So we work with the intention of achieving something. Now comes the second part “Wait”. How long one should wait? For a day? a week? A month? A year? Or should we keep waiting till eternity? That’s the biggest decision we might have to take. We shouldn’t wait too long and let other opportunities pass by us. Also we shouldn’t be too impatient to lose the results of our own hard work.
Abraham Lincoln has said that “Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle”. So the near perfect scenario would be not to dwell on past glory or work, but rather make progressive move which would fetch sweeter rewards. Every second in life is to be cherished. As Mark Twain says : “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
